Ness' Got Talent

This Thursday, June 1, we will be celebrating some very talented Knights.  Our singers, musicians, thespians and Rubik's cube masters will be putting on a show like none other, and all for a great cause. Our social justice team has decided that they would like raise funds for The Children's Hospital Foundation and here's how you can be a part of it all.
At the end of the show, students will have a chance to donate to The Children's Hospital Foundation by putting their coins or cash in their favourite act's donation station.  The act that raises the most funds, will be named the winner of Ness' Got Talent.
The show will begin around 1:00 pm., families and friends of Ness students are welcome to attend.

AAiM Day

This morning was jam packed full of activities, information and fun!
Here are some of the activities we took part in:

FLIGHT: This station taught us all about the the Bernoulli Principal, along with many other scientific principles through a mini-lesson and through experimenting with different designs of paper airplanes.

SPACE: “Crater Fun” participants became scientist-detectives by participating in asteroid impacts simulation and reporting on their characteristics. 

ROCKETRY: Students learned about rocketry by experimenting and launching straw rockets.

COMPOSITES:  Students learned about the evolution of composites and how they are used to build aircrafts. Students also made a small composite panel.

HERC THEATRE: This activity was held on a Hercules aircraft where students learned about and observed various careers in aerospace and aviation, both in the air and behind the scenes!

THE PROGRAM

This summer, join UBC Faculty of Education in a nineteen-day non-credit immersion program in the heart of Quebec City.  The program is designed to respond to the needs of all French second language teachers, both experienced teachers and those just entering the profession. The program is open to all levels of French second language speakers, from absolute beginner to advanced. The program also welcomes applicants who are not in the teaching profession.

Develop your oral communication skills as well as an appreciation of Quebec¹s unique culture. Morning classes, afternoon workshops and field trips concentrate on improving the participant¹s ability to converse in French. There is no prerequisite for the program; previous classroom experience and prior knowledge of French are not required.

The program is offered during theQuebec City Summer Festival. Experience the Festival¹s many cultural activities, from street musicians, concerts and plays to parades and fireworks on the St. Lawrence River.

BURSARY for BC TEACHERS

The Department of Canadian Heritage of the Government of Canada provides funding for BC teachers. Bursaries are administered by the UBC Faculty of Education, for the French Programs Unit of the BC Ministry of Education.

·      Canadian Teachers from other provinces or territories may qualify for their own province or territory¹s bursary programs and should check with their School Board or Provincial Coordinator.

REGISTRATION & FEES

Reserve your attendance at this 2017 summer program ­ registration is now open, and we recommend early registration to avoid disappointment!

·      A $300 deposit is required with your online registration.

·      Registration deadline: April 28, 2017

The cost of the program is $3,100. Eligible BC teachers will receive a $1,600 bursary bringing the cost down to $1,500.

"Wellness Today: Building Healthy Futures"
St. James-Assiniboia School Division presents the 2017 Safe Schools Community Forum, "Wellness Today: Building Healthy Futures."
Our Safe Schools Forum is a biennial event where staff, students and members of our community come together to learn about key topics relating to safety in our schools. This year's forum, taking place on April 12 from 4:30- 7:00 p.m. at Westwood Collegiate, boasts the theme of Wellness. St. James-Assiniboia School Division has partnered with numerous local organizations and individuals to break down the broad spectrum of wellness into areas of mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing. Our forum aims to provide valuable information and additional support to help students and families in our community achieve happy, healthy futures.
As part of our commitment to keeping our schools safe, all 26 schools in our Division have Safe Schools Committees. These committees will be presenting at the event to share some of the safety efforts and ongoing initiatives happening within our schools. The forum will also feature a presentation from Sources of Strength, keynote speakers, videography projects, information booths, live entertainment, student performances, door prizes and much more. Wishing you all a safe and happy spring break.

Over the past two days, our grade 6 students took part in presentations put on by WISE Kidnetics.  They had the opportunity to  build and compare series, and parallel circuits using Snap Circuits – an electronic, educational toy. In addition, they built a simple motor using a battery, an elastic, two safety pins, and magnets.

Expo science projects at Ness

Students are sharing their learning by presenting their science fair projects over lunch hours throughout the week.

Congratuations to Belle and Sheriss, who won silver, and to Ryan and Mikael who won gold at last night's Concours d'art oratoire competition.

Badminton ID Camps

Badminton season is about to start!  ID camps are taking place this week on Wednesday and Friday at lunch (12:10 p.m.) and on Thursday afternoon from 3:45 - 5:30.  We look forward to seeing many Knights come for this activity!

Hé ho!

We'd like to extend a huge thank you to the Parent Network for supporting our school-wide outing to the Festival du Voyageur last week.  The students had a wonderful day.  Your generous contribution to this outing was sincerely appreciated.  We continued our festivities the following day with a Festival gym blast.  Congratulations to room 206, the champions of our Voyageur games - hé ho!

Personal Electronic Devices

Students are reminded that if bringing personal electronic devices to school, these devices must stay in lockers between 8:50 - 3:45.  If students are needing to contact home, they are asked to use the phone in the office.  We continue to encourage students to leave valuable items at home.

Student-Led Conferences: A Celebration of Learning

Student-Led Conferences: A Celebration of Learning – Term 2

March 7th 2017 (4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.)

 

Student-led conferences will be held on the evening of Tuesday, March 7th.  The conferences are a celebration of all the hard work your child has accomplished.  We hope you will come out and share in your child’s progress.

 

Conferences will be held in your child’s various classroom environments.   Families are welcome to visit various classrooms any time between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.  This will be done in an open house format and therefore parents will not be required to book a conference time.  Please come when it best suits you.  The process of our student-led conferences is designed to paint a clear picture of your child’s learning to date.  Students have the responsibility of taking an active role in explaining and demonstrating their learning and setting goals for improvement.

 

During these conferences, you will have the opportunity to look through work samples and/or participate in some activities together with your child.  Throughout the evening, you will move from one classroom/subject area to another at your leisure.   Please note that there will be other families in the classrooms at the same time.  If at any point you feel a particular classroom is too busy at the time of your arrival, please feel free to visit another learning environment and return to any classroom at a later time during your visit.  Should you wish to discuss something of a particularly sensitive nature, we invite you to schedule a meeting with a particular teacher at a later date.

 

One on one appointments will be available for Mme Marcoux (Guidance/Resource), and Mme Buckwold (Principal). Please call the school office at (204) 837-1361 to book an appointment with the above mentioned staff members.

 

It is very important for your child to be able to discuss his/her progress at the conference and hear your praise and encouragement for his/her accomplishments.  Please make an effort to attend.  The staff at Ness Middle School looks forward to seeing you there.

Please note that the canteen will be closed on Thursday, March 2nd.  Students should ensure to bring their lunch to school.

Welcome Back! Bonne rentrée!

Happy New Year Ness Knights!  We hope you had a wonderful holiday and we are wishing you the very best for 2017.  We said a sad goodbye to Mr. McGavock before the holidays and wished him well in his travels.  We look forward to his visits to the school in the upcoming months.  We'd like to welcome Mme Champagne to our Grade 6 and Practical Arts teams.  Mme Champagne is returning from maternity leave and is thrilled to get to know and work with our students.  We also bid farewell to Mme Banks who is heading off to Strathmillan school for the remainder of the school year.  She will be sincerely missed and we look forward to seeing her back at Ness next year!

Please be reminded that school reopens on Monday, January 9th and there will be an early dismissal on Tuesday, January 10th.  We look forward to welcoming back our Knights on Monday!
